Career Coach’s Secret Formula for Directionless Teens and Young Adults

If you’re reading this, you’re probably lying awake at night wondering… “How do I help my 18-year-old pick a career path without nagging?” Trust me—I get it. As a parent myself, I’ve been there. The good news? There’s a simple way to guide them without the stress. Let’s break it down.

First—stop searching for the one perfect career. That’s like asking them to pick a life partner at 18! Instead, help them explore categories of work that fit their strengths.

Try this: Ask your teen these 3 questions

  1. What’s something you’d happily do for free? (This is a possible Passion)
  2.  What do people compliment you on? (These are Strengths)
  3. ‘What kind of problems do you enjoy solving? (Their feeling of Purpose)

You wouldn’t buy a car without test-driving it, right? Careers work the same way.

Here’s how to ‘test drive’ jobs for free:

  1. Watch ‘A Day in the Life’ videos (YouTube)
  2. Try a 8-hour micro-internship (For instance, shadow a family friend’s job)
  3. Take a free online course so they get a taste of the work (Coursera, Skillshare or edX are some options)

Sometimes, knowing what they don’t want is the fastest path to clarity.

Ask them:

  1. What’s your idea of a miserable workday?
  2. Would you rather work with people, data, or things?

I used this with my own kid. He realized ‘I would hate sitting at a desk all day’—which ruled out 50% of careers instantly!

Here’s a secret: They don’t need to have it all figured out. Just encourage simple steps this week:

  • Research one career
  • Talk to one person in that field
  • Try one small task (e.g., design a logo if they like art)

Remember: Your job isn’t to have all the answers—it’s to give them tools to explore.
