How Can I Decide What Career Is Right for Me?

It’s a common question! Having a career that you love is important because most people spend eight to ten hours a day working. If you don’t love what you do you will probably be miserable.

So, your question is “How do I choose a career that is right for me?” Well, here are some tips and tricks to help you find out.

1. Use a Mind Map

You don’t have to follow a set format when using a mind map. It’s an approach that encourages originality. Grab a piece of blank paper and write down thoughts and ideas that interest you. Writing words or drawing images that are related to your personality type and professional goals can also be helpful. List some related careers. Draw arrows between your thoughts or label them to see how they might connect. For many people, writing it down, seeing something on paper, helps them connect their thoughts and find focus.

You can also draw a Venn diagram to show where your goals, lifestyle, interests, and skills overlap. And, you can create a list of advantages and disadvantages for various careers if you already have some ideas. Once you have something on paper, you can start to organize your ideas from those you are most interested in to those you are least interested. This can help you narrow down what you truly want.

2. Take a Personality Test

Another tip is to take a personality test. Your personality plays a big role in choosing a career. There are many personality tests to help people choose a course of study, a career, and types of interpersonal connections that would be most suitable for them. Go for a test that examines interest, aptitude, character, and emotions. If you are young, your personality will continue to evolve. It you are really interested in a career not listed by these tests, research it anyway. Ask AI to give you options for how your personality can fit into a specific field.

3. Eliminate Options You Don’t Like

Your personality test results can include a list of potential career paths. You will likely be able to identify job options or pathways you aren’t interested in. Cross them off the list if they doesn’t appeal to you or conflicts with your values but first do a little research about what they actually involve.

By eliminating employment categories that aren’t a good fit for you, you can narrow your focus and a list with fewer possible job titles will make it easier for you to feel confident about picking the best career path.

4. Time to Research

Explore your possible career paths after spending some time refining your list. You can look up basic information online (AI is super helpful and fast for this step), speak with professionals in the industry, or arrange a shadow day or internship. (We recommend all three). Here are some things to consider when researching your options:

  • Education – There will be a set of professional or educational criteria for each career path. Reading job descriptions in job postings can help with this or just ask AI. There may be work experience, licensing, or degree requirements. You can make an informed choice and narrow down your list by being aware of the prerequisites.
  • Job satisfaction – Your happiness contentment and fulfillment in your career and day-to-day work is called job satisfaction. Things like working conditions, pay, relationships, schedule, work locations and other benefits contribute to job satisfaction. You might have selected the right career but if you don’t like the people you are working with it is probably time to find a different job but not necessarily to find a different career.
  • Work-Life Balance – The difference between the amount of time and energy spent on work and the amount of time and energy available for personal pursuits is known as work-life balance. Everyone has a distinct ideal for striking a balance between work, personal responsibilities, leisure, general happiness, and family obligations. Different job and career options offer different levels of work-life balance.
  • Money – Your life goals play a role in how much money you need or want to make. Balancing your job satisfaction and money will help you confirm the best career path for you. Often simply doing the work you love will result in the money flowing.

5. Know Your Needs and Wants

Your needs and wants reflect your personal and professional goals. In addition to paying you your future work will take a significant amount of your time. Make a list of things like pay, perks, personal fulfillment, the capacity to influence change, flexibility and the chance for career or personal development to consider about this career.

Check that list and note your needs for each item as well as your ideal situation for each. You should rearrange your list in order of priority. For each of careers you are considering, compare this list with the research you did.
